Scheduled Period
III Year - 1 Semester | 04/10/2021 - 15/01/2022
Hours: 72 (24 exercises, 48 lesson)
Prerequisites
Students are supposed to have elementary notions of classical mechanics and thermodynamics.
Target skills and knowledge
Students should acquire a good knowledge of the electromagnetic phenomena and their theoretical description, in terms of Maxwell's equations and the Lorentz equation. They should also learn the deep connection existing between classical electrodynamics and the principle of Relativity
Examination methods
The examn has a written part, foreseeing problem solving, and an oral part on the theory of electromagnetism
Assessment criteria
Course contents
Classical electrodynamics, starting from electrostatics and reaching the full differential and integral version of Maxwell's equations. This part is followed by about ten lesson on special relativity presented in its covariant form, and concludes with Maxwell's equations written in the tensor formulation.
Planned learning activities and teaching methods
All lessons are hold on the blackboard and problem solving is a central issue.
Additional notes about suggested reading
The main textbook is ``Introduction to Electrodynamics'' by D.J. Griffiths.
